Afmin On10 School

The first thing that caught my attention in Namibia, was that they speak my language – Afrikaans! Namibia is a land of extremes – rich in culture and history.

The first time I set foot in Namibia, was way back in 1972, a a first year Theology student. We traveled by bus from Upington, through Ariams Vlei to Ai-Ais, where we spent the night. The next day, we climbed down the Fish River Canyon. Today, this remains one of my worst nightmares – climbing down was not a problem but climbing up is something I would rather not discuss!

Interesting Facts about Namibia

Namibia was a German colony 1883 – 1915 and then ruled by South Africa 1915 – 1990. The country gained independence in 1990. Situated on the South West Coast of Africa, and bordering South Africa at the Orange River, Namibia covers an area of 823,144 sq.km. The coast is very popular for fishing and wild-life viewing in the north brings many tourists to the country. Diamonds, Uranium and other minerals are exported which boosts the economy. Their population is estimated to be 1,9 million, with 250,000 people living in the capital city, Windhoek. The official language is English, though most Namibians speak Afrikaans. Their literacy rate is 76%. Freedom of religion is allowed. Despite the high profile of Christian churches representing 79.9% of the population, other religions are being granted similar opportunities in schools and in the media.
